A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Montenegro for the first time, and I completely fell in love with the country. I think one of the main reasons why I enjoyed it so much was because it was almost empty. Autumn had just begun, tourist season was coming to an end, and there were very few visitors around.
That trip made me realize that I prefer traveling off-season. There’s something special about experiencing a place almost like a local rather than as part of a crowd. To be honest, I enjoy noticing the small details that make you fall in love with a city: quiet streets, open spaces, and locals simply going about their daily lives.
What I appreciate most is that traveling this way feels like a true escape rather than a source of stress or pressure. When visiting Europe, for example, many people spend most of their time rushing from one tourist attraction to another, driven by FOMO and packed itineraries. Off-season travel feels different. It feels less like checking destinations off a list and more like genuinely experiencing a place.
Personally, I believe the most important part of traveling is being able to appreciate a destination — its culture, scenery, and atmosphere — while connecting with your surroundings and allowing yourself to relax. For me, standing in overcrowded places just for a photo is not particularly enjoyable. I would rather travel at my own pace.
Instead of constantly feeling rushed, you can take the time to absorb the environment around you: empty beaches stretching into the distance, basketball courts where local teenagers are playing, or quiet bookstores where you can unwind for an hour. Those simple moments often become the most memorable parts of a trip, and to me, they are incredibly valuable.
In other words, I highly recommend traveling off-season, especially for those who are looking for a more meaningful and relaxing experience. It offers a chance to slow down, connect more deeply with a destination, and enjoy travel in a way that feels authentic rather than performative.
For me, traveling is not about chasing crowds or collecting selfies. It is about creating meaningful memories, finding beauty in everyday moments, and allowing a place to reveal itself naturally, without the noise and rush of peak tourist season.
