How I Discover Indie Artists to Listen To

Music is something I can’t go a single day without, and I genuinely enjoy taking my time when it comes to discovering new artists. There’s nothing quite like having an Apple Music library filled with both big and small artists—it keeps my mind stimulated and constantly inspired.

For some people, discovering new indie artists can feel difficult, but it really doesn’t have to be. With the resources and technology we have today, finding new music that aligns with your taste is easier than ever—and the best part is that it’s all online.

One of the main ways I discover indie artists is through music magazines and blogs. Whenever I have some free time and feel the urge to explore something new, I visit sites like Pitchfork, NME, or Consequence to read their album reviews.

I specifically mention album reviews because I think they play an important role in the discovery process. They give me a sense that an album has been “approved” by people who truly care about music. While this isn’t a strict requirement, a well-reviewed album is often a safe and rewarding place to start.

That said, this is far from the only way to find great artists—especially when we have access to a powerful tool like YouTube. This is where many of us discover niche music that thrives thanks to passionate communities built around specific sounds and scenes.

In my experience, the best way to discover new artists on YouTube is through curated playlists. These playlists often compile songs within a specific genre, making it easier to dive into a particular sound. For example, if you’re into indie folk, there are countless channels dedicated to creating playlists that capture the essence of that genre.

Last but not least, editorial playlists on platforms like Apple Music or TIDAL are not to be overlooked. Personally, I think they’re incredibly valuable because they’re curated by people whose job is to select and organize music thoughtfully.

Just like on YouTube, it all comes down to the genre you’re in the mood for. What I love most is that many curators allow themselves to be creative, which means you can stumble upon niche sounds or entire music scenes you didn’t even know existed. And for me, that sense of discovery is what makes the whole experience so special.
