In 2023, I spent a few months in Europe to relax and reset my mind. I was based mostly in Zurich, Switzerland, but I also took the opportunity to visit Croatia—and a lesser-known destination that completely stole my heart.
That destination is Montenegro, a young and often overlooked country nestled along the Adriatic Sea in the Balkans. During my trip, I spent a few days in Herceg Novi, a charming coastal town that I quickly fell in love with.
I chose Herceg Novi partly because of its proximity to Croatia, and partly because of how stunning it looked in photos. After browsing a few images online, I didn’t hesitate much—I booked a bus ticket and reserved a room in a small hotel that had everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
To put it simply, my experience in Montenegro exceeded all expectations. From the very first day in Herceg Novi, I was able to explore the town on foot, wandering through its quiet streets and scenic corners. I spent hours at the beach reading, listening to music, and enjoying the atmosphere. It was exactly what I had been looking for.
One of the things I appreciated most about Montenegro is how affordable it is compared to other European destinations. I stayed in a lovely hotel and enjoyed great meals without spending much at all. It’s refreshing to find a place that offers both beauty and value, especially in a region where prices can quickly add up.
If you’re looking for a destination where you can unwind by the sea and enjoy delicious dinners as the sun sets, Montenegro is an excellent choice. In towns like Herceg Novi, the beaches are perfect for swimming and relaxing, while the nearby promenades are lined with inviting restaurants and cafés.
Another pleasant surprise was that you don’t need to visit in peak summer to enjoy everything Montenegro has to offer. I traveled there just after the high season, and the weather was still warm and sunny. Even better, the crowds had thinned out, making the experience feel more intimate and authentic.
Montenegro may not be as famous as some of its European neighbors, but that’s part of its charm. It feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered—one that rewards you with natural beauty, tranquility, and a slower pace of life. If you’re planning a trip to Europe and want to go somewhere a little different, this is a good destination.
