Ascona: The Swiss Town You Need to Know

To be completely honest, Switzerland is one of my favorite destinations in the world. This small Alpine country stands out not only for its breathtaking landscapes and dramatic mountains, but also for its charming towns that feel almost too perfect to be real—like something out of a dream.

One of those places is Ascona, a hidden gem in the southern part of the country that I feel compelled to share. Located in the canton of Ticino, Ascona offers a unique experience that feels quite different from the typical image many people have of Switzerland. It’s especially magical during the summer, when the town fills with warm light, lively energy, and a relaxed, almost Mediterranean atmosphere.

Set along the shores of Lake Maggiore, Ascona blends stunning waterfront views with a vibrant yet laid-back local scene. The first time I visited, I was genuinely surprised—it felt like a slice of California in Europe. The palm trees, the lakeside promenade, and the golden sunlight reflecting on the water created a vibe I hadn’t experienced anywhere else in the country.

One of my favorite things to do was simply wander. With music in my headphones and an ice cream in hand, I spent hours walking through its narrow streets and open piazzas without any real plan. That’s what makes Ascona special—it invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment. Every corner feels picturesque, whether it’s a row of colorful houses, a small café, or a quiet view of the lake. It’s the kind of place where getting lost feels effortless and rewarding.

What I also love about Ascona is how it challenges the usual perception of Switzerland. Many people imagine snowy mountains and winter scenes, but there’s another side to the country. In summer, especially in Ticino, you’ll find warm weather, palm trees, and a lifestyle that feels closer to Italy than to the Alps. Ascona perfectly captures that contrast.

If you’re planning a summer trip to Switzerland, I highly recommend setting aside a day to visit Ascona. Whether you’re walking along the promenade, enjoying a meal by the lake, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression. Without a doubt, it’s my second favorite destination in Switzerland—right after Zurich—and one I would gladly return to.
