All my friends know that I love fashion, but few of them know that I’m actually not interested in following trends. No matter how many times people say that bomber jackets or skinny jeans are out of style, I’ll keep wearing the pieces I truly like.
Personally, I believe that dressing well has more to do with what we enjoy wearing than with what society says is fashionable. For that reason, today I want to share a few reasons why I prefer not to constantly keep up with the latest trends. Fashion can be a beautiful way to express ourselves, but it doesn’t have to be dictated by what is popular.
Reason One: I’m Much Happier Wearing Clothes I Actually Like
As I mentioned before, dressing well is mostly about our personal taste. When we choose clothes based on what we genuinely like, our identity and personality naturally come through in the way we dress. It allows us to stand out instead of simply wearing what everyone else is wearing.
It’s also important to remember that trends don’t always match everyone’s preferences. Someone who loves aesthetics like Parisian chic or cottagecore, for example, might not feel represented by whatever happens to be trending at the moment. When you dress according to your own taste, fashion becomes much more personal and enjoyable.
Reason Two: Following Trends Isn’t a Sustainable Habit
To be honest, I think we should buy clothes that we can wear for more than just one season. Trend culture often pushes us to get rid of perfectly good clothing just to make space for new pieces that will be discarded just as quickly.
When I look at my closet, I feel happy knowing that I still wear clothes I bought almost ten years ago. Some of my favorite pieces have stayed with me for years because they truly reflect my style. In my opinion, being mindful when buying clothes is one of the best sustainable fashion habits anyone can have.
Reason Three: Following Trends Is Expensive
If we’re being realistic, we have to admit that following trends can be unnecessarily expensive. As trends constantly change, keeping up with them often requires spending more and more money just to stay “up to date.”
If you want to manage your finances more wisely, it’s better to buy clothes you genuinely want to wear rather than chasing whatever trend is popular at the moment. That way, each purchase becomes a real investment instead of a temporary expense. Over time, this approach can help you build a wardrobe that truly reflects who you are.
